Day 1: Cluj Napoca

Upon your arrival in Cluj- Napoca airport you will meet your local guide and transfer to the hotel. Leaving the airport you will travel in comfort to the old city centre of Cluj- Napoca, while your local Romanian guide entertains you with enchanting tales of history of the place. We start with the Roman ruins of Napoca, followed by a visit to St. Michael Catholic Cathedral built in the Gothic-style during the 14th century and the Orthodox Cathedral built in early 20th century in Neo- Byzantine style.

Day 2: Cluj Napoca – Sighetu Marmatiei - Sapanta - Vazu Izei (250km/ 155miles)

A morning departure brings you to Maramures, a region where time seems to stand still and not much has changed in the last hundred years. This place is known for its traditions, the kindness of the people and for its beautiful wooden churches (recognized by UNESCO as World Heritage) and the beautiful hand-carved gates of Maramures.

Here we visit the most famous rural villages:Breb, a typical village of Maramures for its architecture, for its customs and traditions, the village Sarbi, on river Cosau, a true open-air museum of folk architecture with the impressive number of carved monumental gates where there are: a sawmill, a flour mill, a hammer mill, a mill and a distillery, the village Budesti with its beautiful wooden church.

In the afternoon we visit the unusual Merry Cemetery in Sapanta. The cemetery-museum is associated with the culture of the ancient Dacians, whose philosophy is based on the immortality, they consider the death a moment of joy.

Later we stop to visit the highest wooden church in Europe - Sapanta Peri - 78 m height.

Day 3: Vadu Izei – Barsana – Rozavlea – Ieud – Bogdan Voda – Vadu Izei (150km/ 93miles)

Experience a day out in Maramures, visiting the wooden churches of Maramures, the UNESCO World Heritage site of Barsana Monastery with its beautiful complex of buildings and with the highest tower in the region; Ieud- the oldest church in Maramures and finally Bogdan Voda or Botiza renowned for their beautiful frescoes.

In the afternoon we visit some making centres of local craft (wood, carpets, tissues) and we'll see the unusual washing machine from another time called Valtoarea.

Day 4: Maramures (50km/ 31miles)

After a morning departure experience a tour on the Mocanita steam train (still used to carry wood down the mountain) in the beautiful virgin forests of Maramures. The train goes up to the Paltin station (21.6 km/ 13miles) and is only two hours away from the town of Viseu de Sus, where a perfect place to halt and enjoy the location has been arranged. Built in 1932, the Vaser Valley railway is still operating, primarily for logging wood from the forest for the wood processing factories in Viseu de Sus. CFF Viseu de Sus is today the last remaining functional forestry train in Europe still used for wood transportation.  Every morning at about 7 o’clock it leaves in a round trip and it stops for 15 minutes every km to fill up the tank with water. Possibility to have lunch barbecue in the woods. Following the tour we return to the guest house in the afternoon.

Day 5: Vadu Izei - Bistrita - Voronet (250km/ 186,3miles)

After breakfast we leave for Bucovina, the land of 2000 monasteries. The monasteries Voronet, Sucevita, Moldovita and Humor with their frescoes both inside and outside, each one with its own dominant color, were decorated between sec. XV and XVI and are considered masterpieces of Byzantine art, unique in Europe, that's why they are part of UNESCO heritage.

In the village of Vama we’ll have a demonstration of painting eggs- a local tradition here and at dawn we will visit the famous Voronet Monastery with its unique color "blue of Voronet" called the "Sistine Chapel of the East".

Day 6: Voronet – Moldovita – Sucevita – Humor – Voronet (150km/ 93miles)

Enjoying a beautiful day in Bucovina with its painted monasteries and learn about its leaving, spiritual and religious history. The Monastery Moldovita, dating back to 1532 and built by Petru Rares with sunny yellow dominant color. This is the biggest church built in Moldavian style. The Suceavita fortified monastery was the last building in the style of Stefan cel Mare, the exterior frescoes date from 1596 and the green color predominates over all.

Nearby you can also visit the black ceramic-making centre in Marginea, an ancient tradition from the time of the Dacians. In the afternoon return to the guesthouse where we will have a carriage ride in the ssurrounding woods. One more reason to admire the virgin nature of Bucovina.

Day 7: Voronet – Falticeni – Tg Neamt – Piatra Neamt (150km/ 93miles)

Leaving the city after breakfast by bus and traveling to the south of Moldova to visit the Monastery Neamt, the oldest monastery in Moldova and the only one monks monastery in Bucovina, followed by a visit to the Monastery Agapia, a wooden church from the 14th century, painted by the greatest Romanian painter Nicolae Grigorescu.

In Targu Neamt we go to visit the Citadel of Targu Neamt one of the most beautiful fortresses from the Middle Ages, part of the defensive system of Moldova. Fortress Neamtu dates back to the times of the famous Princes Petru I Musat and Stephen the Great. To get to the fortress we have a short walk in the forest.

In the evening arrival in Piatra Neamt a beautiful mountain town dominated by Stephen the Great Square. Dinner and overnight central hotel in Piatra Neamt.

Day 8: Piatra Neamt - Bicaz - Bacau (150km/ 93miles)

After breakfast we continue our journey to the south of Moldavia to admire the Bicaz Gorges and the Red Lake. Enjoy relaxing time at leisure, viewing the wares of local artists.

At the appropriate time the coach will take you to Bacau airport for your return flight home after your time in beautiful Romania has come to an end.
